College teams to test their financial planning knowledge at FPA Annual Conference

DENVER –The Financial Planning Association® (FPA®), Ameriprise Financial and the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, Inc. (CFP Board) are pleased to announce the 2015 Financial Planning Challenge finalists. This competition, which is jointly sponsored by the three groups, is designed exclusively for college and university finance undergraduate degree programs registered with CFP Board, or related fields of study, through a three-stage event. The first two phases are modeled after CFP Board's Financial Plan Development (Capstone) Course requirement.

The final stages of the competition occur at the FPA Annual Conference – BE Boston 2015, the largest annual gathering of Certified Financial Planner™ (CFP®) professionals, to be held Sept. 26 – 28 in Boston.

The Financial Planning Challenge supports the next generation of financial planners by engaging students and program directors in the financial planning community; raising awareness of career opportunities; and encouraging learning and networking in the financial planning profession. This year, 11 teams competed with the following top eight advancing to the final rounds at the FPA Annual Conference:

  • Kansas State University

  • Texas A&M University

  • Texas Tech University

  • University of Akron

  • University of Georgia

  • Utah Valley University

  • Virginia Tech

  • William Paterson University

"The Financial Planning Challenge has consistently been one of the hallmark events of the FPA Annual Conference," said FPA Executive Director/CEO Lauren M. Schadle, CAE. "Schools participating in the program have unfailingly demonstrated a high knowledge level of the financial planning process. It has been wonderful to see them in action at the conference and we appreciate the partnership with CFP Board and Ameriprise Financial as we look to nurture the next generation of financial planners."

"CFP Board registered programs have many talented future CFP® professionals and the Financial Planning Challenge is a unique way to recognize some of our best and brightest," said CFP Board CEO Kevin R. Keller, CAE. "Many of today's competitors undoubtedly will have great careers and CFP Board is pleased to support a competition that will allow them to gather with their future industry peers and expand their financial planning knowledge even further."

Teams advance in the challenge by competing in the following phases:

  • Written financial planning case study

  • Case study presentation

  • "How Do You Know?" Challenge, a game-show style financial planning knowledge contest

The case study presentation and game-show style knowledge contest occur at the FPA Annual Conference. The top three winning teams will receive a monetary scholarship for their school.
