College teams to test their financial planning knowledge at FPA Annual Conference

DENVER –The Financial Planning Association® (FPA®), Ameriprise Financial and the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, Inc. (CFP Board) are pleased to announce the 2016 Financial Planning Challenge finalists. This competition, which is jointly sponsored by the three groups, is designed exclusively for college and university finance undergraduate degree programs registered with CFP Board, or related fields of study, through a three-stage event. The first two phases are modeled after CFP Board's Financial Plan Development (Capstone) Course requirement.

The final stages of the competition occur at the FPA Annual Conference – BE Baltimore 2016, the largest annual gathering of Certified Financial Planner™ (CFP®) professionals and financial planning thought leaders, to be held Sept. 14-16 in Baltimore.

The Financial Planning Challenge supports the next generation of financial planners by engaging students and program directors in the financial planning community; raising awareness of career opportunities; and encouraging learning and networking in the financial planning profession. This year, the following eight teams are advancing to the final rounds at the FPA Annual Conference:

  • California State University Northridge

  • Kansas State University

  • Ohio State University

  • Texas Tech University

  • University of Akron

  • University of Georgia

  • Utah Valley University

  • William Paterson University

"We greatly appreciate the partnership with CFP Board and Ameriprise Financial over the years to provide these students with an opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge while also giving them a golden opportunity to meet and network with some of the best minds in the profession," said FPA Executive Director/CEO Lauren M. Schadle, CAE. "All of the participating students are proving themselves to be a major part of a very bright future for the profession."

"There is tremendous talent and dedication among the financial planning students in our CFP Board-Registered Programs," said CFP Board CEO Kevin R. Keller, CAE.  "We're pleased to help give some of them an opportunity to put their hard work on display and make meaningful connections with CFP® professionals at the event. We also look forward to welcoming the top three teams to present financial plans at the 2017 CFP Board Registered Program Conference."

Teams advance in the challenge by competing in the following phases:

  1. Written financial planning case study

  2. Case study presentation

  3. "How Do You Know?" Challenge, a game-show style financial planning knowledge contest

The case study presentation and game-show style knowledge contest occur at the FPA Annual Conference. The top three winning teams will receive a monetary scholarship for their school and each will be given an opportunity to attend the 2017 CFP Board Registered Program Conference in Arlington, Virginia. At the conference each team will present a case during a general session in front of hundreds of potential employers and registered program heads from across the country. All members of the three participating teams will have their travel expenses covered by Ameriprise Financial.

"We feel genuinely honored and privileged to be part of the Financial Planning Challenge. This competition is such a special opportunity for our brightest young stars to showcase their skills and jumpstart what will hopefully be a long career in financial services," said David R. Bresler CFP®, Vice President – Advisor Business Development Group at Ameriprise.
