Boston, Mass. – Social Security has been a key contributor to the retirement security of millions of older Americans and a cornerstone in retirement planning. After last month's stock market drop, AARP asked Americans 50 and older, "Do you think you have enough saved for retirement to withstand a stock market drop of 10 percent?" More than half (53.6%) said "no." If Americans can't afford to retire when the stock market drops by 10 percent, can they afford to lose 30 percent of their Social Security if they claim early? Have Americans done enough to maximize their benefits for retirement?  How do financial planners approach Social Security in the work they do with their clients?

Social Security Planning in 2015 & Beyond: Perspectives of Future Beneficiaries and Financial Planners, new research by the Financial Planning Association® (FPA®) and AARP, sought to explore how the experiences and knowledge of future Social Security beneficiaries compare with the experiences and recommendations of professional financial planners. Being unveiled at the FPA Annual Conference in Boston on Sept. 28, FPA and AARP will hold a press conference on the research to brief the media on the research findings.
