Three members also elected to the FPA Board of Directors for 2019 

DENVER (October 3, 2018) – Today, the Financial Planning Association® (FPA®), the country's largest membership association for CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ (CFP®) professionals and those who support the financial planning process, is pleased to announce that Martin C. Seay, Ph.D., CFP® has been elected by the Board of Directors as the 2019 FPA President-Elect for a one-year term. Dr. Seay's term will begin on Jan. 1, 2019, succeeding incoming 2019 FPA President Evelyn M. Zohlen, CFP®.

Dr. Seay serves as the Program Director and Associate Professor of Personal Financial Planning at Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kan., where he oversees and teaches in the CFP Board registered undergraduate, graduate certificate, master's and Ph.D. programs.

A cutting-edge researcher on consumer financial well-being, Dr. Seay is passionate about bridging the gap between academics and the financial planning community through research that guides the future of financial planning. His work has been published in the Journal of Financial Planning, Journal of Behavioral Finance, Journal of Financial Counseling and Planning, Financial Services Review, Journal of Consumer Affairs, Journal of Financial Services Professionals, Journal of Family and Economic Issues, and Journal of Financial Therapy, among others. Additionally, Dr. Seay has received numerous awards for his research including the 2014 and 2017 FPA Annual Conference Best Applied Research Paper Award, the 2016 CFP Board's ACCI Financial Planning Award, the 2016 Montgomery-Warschauer Award, the 2016 Kenneth Tremblay Early Career Housing Award, and the 2018 Richard L.D. Morse Early Career Award.

Dr. Seay received his Ph.D. in Housing and Consumer Economics with an emphasis in Personal Financial Planning from the University of Georgia and is a director for the Academy of Financial Services. He currently serves on the board of directors for FPA, the editorial review board for the Journal of Financial Planning and the Journal of Financial Therapy.

FPA is also pleased to announce the election of three new members to its Board of Directors. Each new board member will serve a three-year term beginning Jan. 1, 2019.

The newly elected FPA board members will apply their diverse backgrounds and experience in helping guide FPA's objective of being the recognized and unquestioned home for CFP® professionals while working to advance the recognition of the financial planning profession.

The new board members are:

  • James Lee, CFP®―President of Lee Investment Management, LLC in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

  • Karen W. McDade, CFP®, AIF®, CDFA―Director of Financial Planning at Ashton Thomas Private Wealth in Scottsdale, Ariz.

  • Jason T. Plank, CFP®, CRPC®, AAMS®, CFS®­―Private Wealth Advisor at Ameriprise Financial in Edina, Minn.

"We welcome these remarkable individuals to the FPA Board of Directors to help shape the vision and strategic direction for the association," says 2018 FPA President Frank Paré, CFP®. The 2019 Board will be comprised of 14 total members, which includes the three newly elected members and FPA Executive Director/CEO Lauren M. Schadle, CAE.
