DENVER – With a 5-4 vote on Friday, June 26, the United States Supreme Court ruled that same-sex marriage is now a right nationwide. The Financial Planning Association® (FPA®), the professional association for CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ (CFP®) professionals, and PridePlanners, the association for planners who serve the LGBT community and unmarried couples, are eager to help financial planners learn how to best serve this client base.

"The recent SCOTUS decision will have significant impact on the work of financial planners who currently guide or who are interested in serving, LGBT families. FPA and PridePlanners are committed to helping planners obtain the latest in planning strategies and connect them with resources that will be integral in helping LGBT clients," said FPA and PridePlanners in a joint statement. "We have had a long working relationship to provide planners with access to educational content and opportunities to increase their skill set in this area and will be offering tools and training in the coming months to help planners learn what they need to know."

An interactive webinar on the issue of planning for LGBT and unmarried couples is in development and will be held in August. In conjunction with the FPA Annual Conference – BE Boston 2015, PridePlanners will conduct a special preconference event on Sept. 25 at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center that will be followed by a breakout session at the FPA Annual Conference.

"The court's historic ruling opens the door fully for the financial planning community to work with the LGBT community, FPA and PridePlanners will now have the opportunity to engage a much larger audience to help planners accrue the knowledge and skill required to work with LGBT clients."
